Anniversary convoy

August 6, 2012  ANNIVERSARY CONVOY

Today was a travel day and we are back on the Alaska Highway. We went from Whitehorse (52 degrees and rain) to just 13 miles from Watson Lake (75 degrees and sunny) at the start of the Cassiar Highway. We are camped in a pretty spot, with full hook-ups.

There wasn’t anything new on the way here, but once we got here and settled in we did get to see something interesting. The MVPA (Military Vehicle Preservation Association) is doing a convoy of some 200 military vehicles to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the building of the Alaska Highway. It was lucky for us that they were stopping in Watson Lake, just 13 miles from where we are camped. We rode into town and there they were, parked along the road. It was quite a sight to see! There were all kinds of military vehicles; many of them were WWII vintage. There were even some vehicles from Australia and Scotland ! We were able to wander among them and talk with the people on the convoy. Some have added camper tops or towable campers behind their vintage vehicles, and others are tent camping from their Jeeps. One guy told us that his cot and poncho were a lot more comfortable than what some of our military are sleeping in. Amen, brother.

After the convoy pulled out to go to their respective campgrounds, we returned home for happy hour, steaks on the barbie, and s’mores over the campfire. It was wonderful to be outside for a change, Life is good!
