To Mt. Rushmore

August 22

Wow...Montana is a BIG state!   We traveled as far as Columbus today and are camped at the Mountain Range RV Park.  It is very nice and convenient and full service.

August 23

We left very early (for us) this morning--7:40 A.M. because we had a long way to go to get to South Dakota.  We found out that some friends from Orange Park, Tom and Paula, are going to be visiting Mt. Rushmore while we are there!  We contacted them and made plans to get together this evening.  We drove 403 miles to our campground in Hill City, SD, without stopping!!!  Steve must have a strong bladder!!

We settled into our very nice (but pricey) campsite at Rafter J Bar Ranch Resort and Tom and Paula came for happy hour.  We had a nice dinner at the Bumpin Buffalo in Hill City before heading to Mt. Rushmore for the patriotic evening program.

The sun was just setting behind the monument as we took our seats in the amphitheater, and the park ranger began his inspiring talk.

A beautiful film followed, giving brief biographies of each of the presidents represented here.  We all stood and sang the National Anthem as the monument slowly lighted up.

All active duty military and veterans were asked to come to the stage for the retiring of the colors.  Paula and I were very proud and emotional as Steve, Tom, and the other veterans and military received a standing ovation and much applause.

With all its faults and problems, this is still a GREAT COUNTRY!
