Back to the USA

August 11, 2012  BACK TO THE USA

Happy hour.
These were traveling days with not much sightseeing along the way.  After leaving the Yellowhead Highway (Rt. 16) we went south on Rt. 97 through more of British Columbia.  We passed through pretty little towns such as Prince George, Quesnel, Williams Lake, Lac La Hache, and Cache Creek, and spent the night in a campground in Spences Bridge.  This campground was located on the banks of the Fraser River  with a nice mountain view.  On each side of the river was a very busy railroad track, with trains going by several times each hour!  The weather was warm enough to have happy hour outside at the picnic tables.
Trains by the campground.

Gary and Daisy on the trail.
Precious hiking.
We are back in the USA!  Our travels today took us through Fraser Canyon, and it was a spectacular drive that followed the river and the railroads through the canyon.  There were mountains and rapids, huge cliffs, and a total of 7 tunnels.  It was a beautiful drive and the scenery was very different from what we have seen further north.  Unfortunately there weren't many places wide enough to stop and take pictures.  Trees blocked our view of Hell's Gate, the narrowest part of the canyon, but we did hike a ways down the trail until we saw a sign that said the next part was a 600 ft vertical drop down a very strenuous section of the trail.  We prudently turned back there.

We also saw a huge semi truck that was advertising a new TV show.  It appeared to have some sort of equipment inside.

We crossed the border at Sumas without incident after waiting in line about 45 minutes. Today's drive brought us back into the land of billboards and heavy traffic, but it also brought us back to  phone service and internet, so we are glad to be here in the lower 48.
We are camped in Fall City, WA at the Snoqualmie River RV Park beside a small river where Corky enjoyed a nice swim this evening.
Corky and Precious take over.
