Dawson City Day 3, and off to Whitehorse

August 3, 2012     Dawson City, Day 3

The sun peeked out for a while this morning so we jumped in the Jeep and raced all the way up to the top of the Midnight Dome, (the mountain behind Dawson City) to look at the view, but we were shrouded in clouds when we got to the top.  We headed back downtown to do a little shopping and stop by the Visitor's Center again.

After lunch, Barb and I went back into town to hear the presentation at the Robert Service cabin.  The presenter was one of the actors that we had seen at the Palace Grand in the Klondike Contest, and we enjoyed talking to him.  He gave a very good presentation of the life of Robert Service and recited some of his poems.  It was quite enjoyable.  We stopped to see the Jack London cabin  and Klondike Kate's gift shop before heading back to the RVs.

Steve and I took the dogs for a long walk along the dike that protects Dawson City from the waters of the Klondike and Yukon Rivers which converge there.  It is interesting to see where the clear Klondike joins the muddy Yukon---it seems as if a line is drawn between them on the water until they merge together further down.  There are also some interesting informations panels spaced along the river. We enjoyed seeing the riverboat that tours the river as it navigated the confluence.
Steve and Corky having fun!
The riverboat is half in the Klondike and half in the Yukon!

After dinner, when we had settled in for the night, the sun came out again, so once again we raced to the top of Midnight Dome and this time we got the view.  It was as spectacular as everyone said it was!

Ugh--this was a LONG day.   We traaveled the 330 miles from Dawson City to Whitehorse along the Klondike Loop Highway.   The views were not as spectacular as they have been on other roads, so that made the trip seem even longer.  We are camped at the Pioneer Campground, and we enjoyed a shopping trip to Wal-Mart this evening.  No pictures today.
