Fort Nelson

June 21,  FORT NELSON, BC
Happy birthday to our great niece, Matelea!
We left Dawson Creek this morning at mile 0 of the Alaska Highway and stopped tonight in Fort Nelson, BC at milepost 283.   We are camped at the Triple G Hidaway, with full RV service, and have met some nice people.
On the way here we took a little side trip to the old Alaska Highway so we could cross the historic Kiskatinaw River Bridge.   This curved  bridge is 531 feet long and is the only original timber bridge built along the Alaska Highway that is still in use today.  It was a neat experience.

A bit further down the highway, we came around a curve and saw the Peace Valley below us covered in clouds!  Beautiful.   After passing through Fort St. John, we traveled the scenic highway and saw one bear and one moose along the way.    We stopped for fuel in Fort Nelson before checking in at the campground.

After we got settled in, Steve and Gary went to the Fort Nelson Museum to see their exhibit of old cars while Barb and I watched TV and had happy hour.
Tomorrow we drive through the Northern Rockies.  We are looking forward to it because our neighbors here said they saw grizzleys, black bear, sheep, moose, and buffalo along the route.  I hope we are as lucky!

  1. The bridge looked fairly substantial.
