South Dakota

June 8, 2012      South Dakota

On Thursday we made the long trek from Pekin all the way to North Sioux City, South Dakota.  We stayed in a nice KOA campground and made a mad dash to Wal-Mart to pick up some necessities (like dog poo bags and sewer treatment--ugh).  We were tired and hit the sack early.

This morning we were on the road early, (for us) at 8:30!  We made it all the way across South Dakota on I-90 and are camped in a pretty spot in a town with the unlikely name of Spearfish.   The campground is nice but there are A LOT of children here!  Unusual for an RV park.  These long days are killers for folks who usually go only 100-200 miles each day.  We should meet up with our traveling companions, Barb and Gary, tomorrow in Montana, and I hope we will not travel so far so fast from here on.

Eastern South Dakota

Touristy western SD

Thoughts on South Dakota:   The eastern part of the state is rather boring in its sameness, but it has a strange beauty all its own.  I can't help but think patriotic thoughts about the fertile plains and feeding America when I see these farms and fields.  And OMG the bugs!  The front of the RV was plastered with bug guts and dead gnats!  The western part of the state is beautiful!  Why they call this the Badlands I can't imagine.  It is very touristy though.

  1. I imagine you folks did not cut south to the Badlands. Well worth the detour. Did you miss the Corn Palace?
