Great Falls 2

June 11, 2012    Great Falls , MT  Day 2

Big sky country indeed!
The beautiful weather today more than made up for the cold, rainy weather yesterday.  It was sunny and 70ish when we were out and about.  After a morning spent puttering around on the RV's, we went into Great Falls to see the sights and have some lunch.

The  5 massive waterfalls that Lewis and Clark saw when they came this way are no more.
Now there are 5 dams and reservoirs on the Missouri River that supply a LOT of hydroelectric power to this area.
Rainbow Falls Dam and Black Eagle Dam and Reservoir

Poor Lewis and Clark could not get their canoes through this part of the river and so they portaged them for 18 miles to get around the falls.   This took 3 weeks to accomplish over difficult terrain, part of which is the area where we are camped.

A trip to Wal-Mart, happy hour, dinner, and a quiet evening rounded out the day.  We have extended our stay here one more day because the guys have some maintenance work they want to do on the RV's, so we will go into Canada on Wednesday.

We were intrigued about the funny looking things hanging on the fence here in the campground .

We found out that these are "beetle catchers."   They trap beetles so they can study and defend against those beetles that are destroying so many trees in the Rocky Mountains.  Interesting!
