Denali, Day 2

JULY 6, 2012   A DAY IN DENALI

This was a sleep-in morning because we had been up so late last night, so we didn't get started until 10ish.  We stopped at the Park Campground to see if they had room for us because we were considering spending another night here on Sunday, but they were all full.  We went back to the Visitor's Center to get a stamp on National Parks Passport and check out the bookstore.

After lunch, we boarded a free shuttle bus to the Kennel for the sled dogs of Denali.  It was fun to see and pet these beautiful animals and watch them pull a sled on gravel.   It was interesting to learn about the differences between these dogs which are bred for pulling heavy loads and the racing dogs we saw in Fairbanks, which are bred for speed.

Look at those eyes!
MUSH you huskies!
Look at them go!

After leaving the kennels, we did some shopping in the village, had dinner at a Fish and Chips place, and watched rafts being pushed down a long hill into the Nenana River for rafting trips that started at 7 or 8 pm.   They can start this late because it just doesn't get dark here.
Going down....

Watching the rafts.

We took a ride up to the Grand Denali Hotel, high on a mountain to see the spectacular view, then headed home for an early bedtime.  Tomorrow at 7 AM  we leave on an 8 hour bus tour that goes 66 miles into the wilderness. We are hoping for some more great animal sighting and maybe we will see Denali!
