Denali to Wasilla

July 8, 2012     Denali to Wasilla

Today was a travel day.   We left Denali in the cold (49 degrees) and the rain and headed south.  On the way we stopped to see the impressive Alaska Veteran's Memorial.

For my submariner friends.

Army, Navy, AirForce, Marines, and Coast Guard Memorials

We had a mini-crisis in Talkeetna.  We didn't realize how small the town was and how narrow and crowded the streets were and our 40 ft. RV with Jeep in tow got in a rather tight spot.   Thanks to Steve's expert driving we managed to get out of there, but we lost all interest in going back to visit the town.

The weather began to clear as we reached Willow, and was sunny and much warmer by the time we arrived in Wasilla.  We did some shopping at a HUGE Wal-Mart Superstore, got gas, then checked in at the Big Bear Campground for 2 nights.  We spent happy hour plotting our course for the next few days, then had dinner and a quiet evening.

We have not seen Sarah Palin or any of her family yet, and we still haven't seen Mt. McKinley, or Denali, or whatever they call it.   LOL

  1. Hi Sarah,
Sandra and I are really enjoying your blog. We went to Alaska five years ago and also went to Denali and the Alaska Veterans Memorial. As retired Navy I especially enjoyed the memorial on the way back from Denali. I took lots of pictures and we both enjoyed the trip. My sister lives a few miles outside of Wasilla and my youngest son and his wife are travelling there now. They are currently on a boat tour out of Seward and will be travelling by train back to Anchorage this evening where they will be staying with my sister again. Sandra and I hope to go to Alaska again soon but until then we will be reliving our trip through your blog.

  2. Heyyyyy Colts--sorry U didn't have a good experience in Talkeeta--we had a blast there--of course we (being of the super intelligent type!???) were there in our jeep :-) we went to the Talkeeta Moose Dropping Festival--one of best days ever. Heyyyy if U stay in Wasilla much longer go by the River Side Camper RV park & say Hello to Kenny & Sheila (owners) for us. Also look at the 'shrine' there--well that is where Guy & I got marriered 9 years ago--I am certain they must have made a shrine to us!! Happy Travels to you'll--look forward to seeing you again.
