Halibut and Homer

July 15, 2012    Halibut and Homer

Another cold (48 degrees) rainy day did not deter our intrepid fishermen from braving the weather in search of halibut and cod.  After a great breakfast at Up Chuck's, Gary and  Steve set out in Cook Inlet with Captain Rusty of J & J Charters aboard the HER'S TOO in search of the delicious fish. It was interesting to watch them put the boat in the water.   They took it down the ramp with a truck,   the passengers and crew climbed aboard using a ladder, then a big tractor turned it around and pushed it into the surf.  Cook Inlet has the 2nd highest tides in the world, so these guys really have to know what they are doing!

Turning around

And away they go!
Everyone returned victorious with a fine catch of halibut and cod!   It is all filleted and cleaned and stored in our freezer and we can't wait to eat it!  The guys said that the they caught fish almost as soon as they put the bait in the water!   It was a struggle to pull in the big fish and the three pound weight, but they had a ball doing it.   They never got a chance to take many pictures or to eat the food they had taken with them.  Now that's what I call a successful fishing trip!

Describing the one that got away!

YUM!

Beautiful fillets.

Packing the filets.

Washing the fish and getting it ready to freeze.
While the guys were gone, Barb and I headed for the absolutely charming town of Homer.  We had a great lunch at the Boardwalk Fish and Chips, and shopped some of the quaint little shops on the Spit.  We liked Homer so well we plan to go back tomorrow.

After we picked up Steve and Gary and their catch, we were headed back to the RV's when we saw another moose and her calf.   We love seeing them so close  to us.
