Independence Day

JULY 4, 2012     INDEPENDENCE DAY

What fun it was today to experience the 4th of July celebration in small town America!   We went to the parade and festival in North Pole, Alaska.  There were no bands in the parade, but there was a military contingent that got a huge round of applause, lots of tractors and 4 wheelers, the local high school football team and cheerleaders, inline skaters, a jump rope group (which was really good), several politicians, and a number of animals (dogs, rabbits, horses large and miniature, goats, and at least one rooster.)

After the parade the festivities moved to Christmas Creek where there were tents of local crafts and food, more politicians, and even some polynesian dancers.  There was lots of patriotism and local color and it was really a nice way to celebrate Independence Day.

Gary and Barb's friends, the Jauholas, invited us to their home in Fairbanks for a holiday cookout.   They have lived in Alaska many years, and their home showcases many items of Alaskan culture.   They have whale baleen on display in their living room along with artwork done for them by native friends.  I even got to try on a real museum quality parka that was made for Gerrie!  Carl prepared baked halibut that he had caught himself, and it was delicious!   We had a wonderful time visiting with them in their lovely home and enjoying their Alaskan hospitality.

I LOVE this parka!
Keeping warm!

Carl's beaver and moose hide gloves for hunting/trapping.

These should keep his feet nice and warm!
