Homer again

July 16, 2012  Homer again

We woke up this morning to an amazing sight....the sun was shining!!!   It was only 51 degrees, but the lack of rain made it a beautiful day.

Since the guys had not been to Homer, we drove down there again today and had a great time.   The little town and the Homer Spit are even prettier in the sunshine.  We walked around the shops and the marina for a while and watched a happy dog swimming in the bay.  Corky would have loved it.

We also enjoyed seeing some strange old boats in a boatyard and were amused by the upside-down tree trunks stuck in the ground so the roots made a good perch for eagles.

A very unusual boat
I wanted  to see the inside of the Salty Dawg Saloon, so we stopped in, and I had the best Bloody Mary I've ever tasted.   The bartender was a hoot, and the decor was most unusual--people have left dollar bills with writing on them tacked on every available surface.   The bartender says that it has been estimated that there are about $35,000 dollars tacked up throughout the bar.   It was a fun experience.

Great Bloody Marys......and dollar bills everywhere!

Back in Ninilchik we drove by to see the beautiful historic Russian Orthodox Church, built in 1901, which overlooks the Inlet, then went home and sat out in the sun for a while.  Steve even washed the Jeep again.

For dinner we had fresh fried halibut that was still swimming yesterday--thank you Steve and Gary!   It was WONDERFUL!

Off to Anchorage tomorrow.
